Nature is good. What humans do is artificial, and bad.
That’s the sentiment that subliminally saturates our modern times. I’ve grown up with this idea in mind and I often see it all around me.
And I think it’s wrong.
I’m not saying that all that humans do is good. Our food industry is wretched and is poisoning us. And many other things that humans have developed are destructive. But not all.
On the other hand, “nature” is not a synonym of good. Nature is cruel, cold, wet; is full of famine and death. All that we have done, we’ve done to live a longer, better life.
(Pause)
All that is in the universe is natural. Earth was created by natural means, and so it’s life. Evolution uses natural principles. Humans themself are a product of nature and, so is our thinking.
All that humans do, they do it by natural means. There is nothing else available really.
So a product of nature, working only by natural means, can create something unnatural?
It’s almost a linguistic-philosophical distinction that creates some real boundaries in our own thinking.
Instead of judging something for what it really is, we just apply labels to it.
“Having a chip in your brain is not natural!”
Why not?
